Exclamation Indonesia admits cases of human transmission of bird flu

Indonesia admits cases of human transmission of bird flu
06/10/2006 -- 22:08(GMT+7)

http://www.vnanet.vn/NewsA.asp?LANG...&NEWS_ID=202835

Jakarta (VNA) - An Indonesian minister on June 9 said that human-to-human transmission of bird flu probably occurred in the country's seven cluster cases, but ruled out a pandemic of H5N1 across the country.

"Limited human-to-human transmission may have occurred in small clusters in the country," Jakarta Post quoted Coordinating Minister for the People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie as saying, following a meeting with agencies involved in curbing the spread of the disease.

Experts were puzzled by a seven-member cluster in Indonesia's Sumatra village in May, which led to speculation that human-to-human transmission had occurred among family members.

However, Aburizal emphasized that the public should not be concerned because it was not a pandemic, and the transmission of the virus continued to be from poultry.

Indonesia has had 37 fatalities from 50 confirmed human cases of bird flu, the paper said, adding that poultry infections have been recorded in 29 of 33 provinces.-Enditem

It is happening...H5N1 has to change it's receptor binding domain to a human one--which requires two amino acid changes in the HA 226-228 area to mirror the 1918 flu structure. It's working on it. It's already been noted to have an S226N change in Turkey. It would be very interesting to know if the Azeri and Iranian clusters have S227N. Whether or not they do, H5N1 S227N is most certainly somewhere in the environment, recombining with other things. If it can get the G228S mutation from pigs, it will be more than half-way there. That might be all it needs to get a foothold in the human population, at which point it can acquire a Q226L for the second wave...

Thanks for all the great info on CurEvents board..ya'll are AWESOME IMO!

Indonesia locally confirms another H5N1 case in a 3 year old girl, AA, from the Jakarta area.

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/JAK146732.htm

Since the five year old boy from Indonesia was counted twice, I adjust the Indo case count:

Thanks for posting all this info on bird flu, and articles. It seems pretty scary out there of all this stuff. We are living in interesting times. It is good to be prepared.

My son (1st Grade) starts school again soon and my daughter (3yrs old) starting preschool. Not looking forward to those sick germs at the schools.

Default Thailand update

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsA...&archived=False

17 yr old male died of BF (not confirmed yet - still added to Thailand cases as locally confirmed seeing that it is very likely to be a confirmed case soon). This patient was not in the suspected case numbers I posted yesterday. There are a few new suspected cases, see the excellent posts of Theresa42 in the Thailand thread ! I raise the number of suspected cases to 10+.

Default Links to follow suspected cases in Thailand

http://dpc8.ddc.moph.go.th/db8/disease/04_bird_day/

Just click on the date and you will get a table covering 4 provinces in Thailand - the Table that Theresa42 posted a few days ago. If you check the last few days, you can see that the new numbers of suspected cases do increase by the day, but that all of them test negative within a day and are added to the totals testing negative. So so far everything looks pretty reassuring ( if things are what they seem that is).
