Default Aronia Juice For Influenza

I have been looking into Aronia juice as a possible remedy for Avian flu..Thought I would share my notes with you:

STUDY OF THE NATURAL ARONIA MELANOCARPA JUICE FOR ANTI-VIRAL ACTIVITY

V. Russev, S. Valcheva-Kuzmanova, A. Belcheva
Pharmacology Section, Department of Preclinical and Clinical Pharmacology and Biochemistry, Varna Medical University, Varna, Bulgaria
Department of Microbiology and Virology, Varna Medical University, Varna, Bulgaria

The natural juice from Aronia melanocarpa fruit is rich in polyphenols most of which are flavonoids (mainly anthocyanins) and tannins. These products and other natural compounds isolated from plants are recently evaluated for their anti-infectious activity. Certain perspectives for finding new active antiviral factors are promising. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of Aronia melanocarpa natural juice on the reproduction in ovo of Influenza virus type A (H3N2). A concentration of 2 000 mg%/100 ml, with initial pH 3.76, is used for the experimental trial. Further in the experiments we apply pH 7.00 to pH 7.50, which corresponds to normal human pH. The results show that the Aronia juice, with concentration and pH, as indicated before, inhibits the reproduction of Influenza virus in its initial stages. The effect most probably is due to the formation of complex compounds between the virion, from one hand, and the flavonoids and tannins, from the other hand. The authors presume that this result influences the adsorption of Influenza virus on the cell surface.

I have seen Aronia juice on sale at Polish Import stores...and I think I saw it at Trader Joe's. It is also called chokeberry. here is more info I dug up:

Aronia melanocarpa
PURPLE CHOKEBERRY

The name "chokeberry" comes from the astringency of the fruit, which are inedible raw.

Aronia melanocarpa has a high concentration of polyphenols and anthocyanins, stimulating circulation, protecting the urinary tract, and strengthening the heart.
Ongoing studies at the University of Illinois also suggest that Aronia may include compounds that fight cancer and cardiac disease.

Aronia Juice
Aronia juice has the highest known ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of all the juices, far surpassing blueberry and pomegranate. Aronia's ORAC exceeds a rating of 6300, making it one of the most powerful antioxidants. ORAC is one of several tests available for measuring antioxidant activity.

The Aronia berry has all of the healthy attributes of the cranberry, but also contains five to ten times the amount of anthocyanins and polyphenols of a cranberry. Anthocyanins are known for their link to a multitude of health benefits including antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and anticarcinogenic activity. In addition, there's evidence of vascular-protective effects leading to a reduction in strokes.

KOREAN ARONIA LIQUOR: Tangnamuyolmesul (aronia medicinal liquor)...30%
‘Tangnamu’ is called ‘chokeberry’ in English (or “aronia” in technical jargon). It is effective in lowering blood pressure and preventing arteriosclerosis.
-----------------
"aronia tea" and "aronia syrups" which are made of extracts and fruit juice sweetened with sugar. "Sweet fruit of aronia" with its sugar content reaching 60 percent and "aronia tincture" have very high contents of vitamin P. "Aronia medicinal liquor" is efficacious for building up cardiovascular system, lowering blood pressure and preventing arteriosclerosis. An infusion of the berries has been used in the treatment of colds.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The fruit should be fully ripe before being eaten and is best after a frost or two.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Aronia melanocarpa is native to the eastern US, however, is commonly planted in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
The fruit is valued for its juice which is very high in anthocyanins, and is reputed as a source of "phenols, leucoanthocyanins, catachines, flavonoles, and flavones" that are considered to be bioactive in humans.
In the Pacific Northwest, the extremely vigorous plants will bear a small crop one year after rooted cuttings are planted.
Yields of up to 17 kg/bush with 10 kg/bush average are reported in Eastern Europe.
In Oregon, an unidentified spring rust on the fruit caused some yield loss but its effect appeared to be minimal.

aging. Reduce the risk of heart deseases and cancer, hampers the agregation of blood platelets, protects from the harmful influence of environment (pollution, radiation), improves immune system.

chokeberry extract had a "gastroprotective" effect in treating acute gastric hemorrhagic lesions in rats, suggesting it might be an effective natural treatment for severe stomach problems in humans, including ulcers. A 2003 study (Malik et al) conducted at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Maryland, has provided preliminary indication of defense against colon cancer.

A 2002 animal-modeled study (Kowalczyk et al), conducted in the Department of Pharmacology of the Military Medical Academy, Lodz, Poland, tested anthocyanins from black chokeberry. The study concluded that chokeberry anthocyanins might be useful in combating "oxidative stress" in cardiovascular patients. Yet another study (Simeonov et al, 2002) conducted at the Medical University in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, found that chokeberry juice without sugar added (artificially sweetened) was "a valuable adjunct" to treating patients with diabetes. Another Bulgarian study (Borissova et al, 1994) showed that chokeberry juice, due to its anthocyane flavonoids, had an anti-inflammatory value, when inflammation was induced by histamine & serotonin. A great many additional studies have been concluded, either proving or hinting at likelihoods & possibilities of staggering health benifits for blood circulation, urinary tract health, heart health, gastrointestinal health, & much else.
So many people are enamored of stale ground up dusty particles of "herbal medicines," the majority of which have no effect beyond that of a placebo when tested in doubleblind studies. Yet if such rubes would incorporate more fruit into their diet, & especially such high-antioxidant phenolics in fruits & fruit juices, as can be had from blueberries, cranberries, chokeberries, lingonberries, & suchlike, they might actually obtain many of the benifits they superstiously imagine can be had from ground up garden rubble bought in healthfood stores!

They used to have Aronia juice at Costco and we drank
gallons of the stuff, it's so good. I haven't seen it there
for months though.

Uh...no...they're not inedible raw. Not if they're the same ones we have here in Ontario. We ate them by the handfuls as kids, since there was a cluster of them we played in (Planet of the Apes, yee haw ). They'd pucker your mouth up tighter than the driest red wine (which I also love). Never had any gastro complaints afterwards, so I don't know why they're supposedly inedible. Maybe it's just a matter of taste.

Aronia is also a fine ornamental shrub--fall color is better than burning bush. It's easy enough to grow--I haven't killed any of mine yet. It does sucker (though not uncontrollably), so you need to give it some space. The fruit WILL curl your gums and make your teeth beg for mercy, lol.
