Two Toronto Hospitals Facing Possible Outbreak
Oct, 01 2005 - 2:00 AM

TORONTO/640 TORONTO - Two Toronto hospitals are under partial quarantine in fear of a respiratory outbreak.
There are reports that 2 people were admitted to Scarborough General hospital with an unknown respiratory illness. As a result, the triage and emergency departments are now under semi-quarantine. It's believed the same areas have been affected at Rouge Valley Centenary in Scarborough.

Other units of the hospitals are functioning normally.

Here's the text from that report. I believe these are the same hospitals which were affected by SARS in 2003. It looks very much as though some procedures insituted after the SARS event have been triggered.

Hansa44,
why don`t you sum up the information or present a link to a news source. Or say who started the rumour.

I'm as concerned as anyone it could be Bird Flu (or SARS), but it might just be TB or Legionnaires disease.

Or pneumonia. After the SARS mess in Toronto, they have very stringent isolation policies.

"Better to be safe than sorry".

Hope it is a false alarm.

Yawn...

Normal procedure these days when the diagnosis isn't immediate.

BG-standard procedure in all hospitals, or this particular hospital?

The AM640 link also says "It's believed the same areas have been affected at Rouge Valley Centenary in Scarborough." Can somebody tell me what that means?

Seriously, I'm looking up 24 hour walmarts nearby if this not typical.

Report was just repeated on 680, pretty much exactly the same wording as before.

Scarborough Grace General hospital (Scarborough is a 1-million-person suburb to the east of downtown Toronto) is under semi-quarantine (the only 2 areas quarantined are the triage and emergency departments) because two people were admitted last night for an unknown respiratory illness. People in Toronto like to make fun of Scarborough's endless strip malls, calling the suburb "Scarberia" (I used to live in Scarborough for a four-year period in the late 90s.

New info just reported from Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital:

12 patients with flulike symptoms were admitted, but the hospital is NOT QUARANTINED. The patients have been placed in a separate room (something-negative?).

If it's flu, then it's rather early for Canada, and the first I've heard so far this fall. Most people here haven't even received their yearly fall/winter flu shot yet--my doctor is holding a flu clinic October 18th.

Blue Jay
I thought that Hansa summed up the info quite nicely. I believe that the word 'sum' comes from 'summary' - short and sweet.
I also appreciate that it was described as rumour given that it has not been carried by any MSM.
Lets go a little easier on those that are attempting to pass on information. I for one appreciate having it. Hansa made it clear that it was not in anyway confirmed, suggested that it could be rumour and included the links that he had. If I was only interested in info that had been thoroughly investigated, I would be relying entirely on my morning paper. Lighten up...

P.S. Thank you for the information Hansa

Oh thank GOd... maybe I will go back to bed. I just woke up, went to the computer and that was the first story I saw.

Story just repeated on 680: Partial quarantine Scarborough General Hospital: 2 people with unidentified respiratory illness. Officials think that the disease could be communicable, hence the precautions.

12 residents from a nursing home admitted to Rouge Valley for flu like symptoms but no quarantine

Scarborough report of 2 admitted and quarantine is correct.

Thank you Quip. I'm not going to bed either anytime soon. Is there anyone the IRC chat? I downloaded Chatzilla but haven't tried it yet.

OK I'll stay up. Here's the story from AM640 (not 680, separate station):

A Toronto Hospital Facing Possible Outbreak
Oct, 01 2005 - 2:00 AM

TORONTO/640 TORONTO - A Toronto hospital is apparently under partial quarantine in fear of a respiratory outbreak.

There are reports that 2 people were admitted to Scarborough General Hospital with an unknown respiratory illness. As a result, the triage and emergency departments are apparently under semi-quarantine.

But earlier reports that Rouge Valley Centenary in Scarborough was also quarantined have been struck down.

Director of Communications at Rouge Valley Health Anne-Marie Males says 12 residents of the 7 Oaks nursing home have been admitted to their hospital with flu-like symptoms. They have all been put in isolated rooms, but she says this is a all normal precaution taken when an illness hasn't been identified.

She says Rouge Valley is asking patients not to bring visitors through emergency, but states again that there is no quarantine in effect at their facility.

Crap, guano took off without clarifying. Do you guys think this is normal?

Also, isn't it still kind of quarantine if they are in a separate room (it was probably negative air pressure you heard, means germs can't escape easily I think).

Shit, don't leave yet anyone. Holy shit I'm blowing all my money on preps tomorrow. This was one of my big triggers if you can't tell.

Didn't mean to start a panic. So much on the news the last 2 days has everybody a little jumpy. Me included.

I was wondering if I was going to get a few more preps Sat. Yep.

I can pretty much guarantee that most of Toronto, with the scary memory of the SARS crisis still fresh in their memories, will be out panic-buying. It's already the lead news story on 680.

I expect you won't be able to find a N-95 mask on the shelves in the whole city by the end of this weekend.

Story just repeated on 680, no new details.

Sorry to seem obnoxious but I ask again: do you think this is normal? I'm jumping out of my skin over here. I'm on the IRC channel (alone) if anyone wants to join. I swear my procrastination will be the end of me. Going prep shopping first thing tomorrow.

I have no idea what an IRC channel is.

Procrastinate? My mother always told me I would be late for my own funeral.

After SARS, I suspect this is the New Normal in Toronto. In fact, so far they seem to be handling the situation well, applying the hard-won lessons from SARS in 2003. There were some tragic deaths from patients who just happened to be in emergency at the same time as incoming SARS patients.

680 just called it a "respiratory outbreak" on air, but still says only 2 patients.

Default Sars

The SARS outbreak started at an old age home. Old folks who had flown back to China for one last look before "you-know" , returned to Toromto with their lungs full of SARS.

Initially it wasn't taken too serriously and it ALMOST broke into the general pop.

Not trying to sound paranoid (again) but I've said before that if China has ANYTHING going on with H5N1 you can bet your bippy that they WILL share it with the world. The obvious Xmission routes would be returning elderly and Chinese students arriving for the fall semester.

Hang onto your hats, kiddies. This COULD get interesting yet.

You were supposed to get some sleep, Mr. G. but I guess that's asking a bit much, since this is happening nearer you than most of us.

In related news: Paris Hilton has ended her engagement to the Greek shipping heir.

And I didn't wake up MrG, honest. Unless he received those telepathic waves I was sending him.

Don't worry about IRC niko, I'm the only one here anyway. It's a chat program.

OK, I'm calming down, Toronto is probably just being super-cautious after SARS.

Still not going to sleep yet. Not that we'll probably get much more info soon, they'll have to run tests right? Although can't they run the Influenza A test pretty quick?

MrG you are all prepped then? My preps are pathetic but that is changing this weekend.

Default Zzzzz gurnythuffphht ... grunt..who's there?

I work weird hours. Trying to get caught up on production. Shipped lotsa collars to the cadaver dogs working NO,La and now the pets are all howling for theirs.

No rest for the wicked.

There is just a mention on the radio stations here. They'll play it down. As soon as they get the b/f to wake the mayor he'll be calling all the stations to put a lid on it or it'll screw up tourism again.

We may even have to hold another concert.

Seriously, there are about 6 MILLION Chinese who live just north of Trono and they are travelling back to HK and Singypour every other weekend. If ANYTHING is gonna break out in North AMerica, maybe even the WURLD, it'll be Trono first.

I'll keep my ears peeled. Should I begin shooting survivors and taking samples for Dr. Niman, you think?

HA? Am I prepped? GR wants to drink pee. I have no qulams about eating (properly cooked of course) survivors. Got lotsa ammo and enough so I won't have to eat my small dog until mid March. Think that'll suffice?

How ironic would THAT be tho? Everybody's watching Indoneesia and wondering why it's gone DEATHLY QUIET there and here, right in my own backyard H5N1 has gone H2H in a plane load of Chinese physics students attending U of Tee.

The mortality rate from listening to our PM come on and try and calm everybody will be well over 80% and to hell with this new strain of H5N1SwineFluEbola that the Chinese government sent.

And I didn't wake up MrG, honest. Unless he received those telepathic waves I was sending him.
Well, you can bet which story is going to get more coverage. You know, I bet she did this just to promote her show.
