'If flu spreads schools will be closed down'

Bilthoven - If the Mexican flu in the Netherlands infects dozens of
people a day, schools will most likely be closed right away.
this said Jim van Steenbergen of the National Health and Environment
(RIVM) on Tuesday. According to Steenbergen particularly children
and young people are vulnerable to the flu virus.

Children have much physical contact and the virus spreads quickly in
this way, he says. Adults work in offices, keep more distance from
each other and infections will spread more slowly , it is expected.

Another two Dutch infected with swine flu

(Reuters) - Another two Dutch are infected with the Mexican flu. The patients are a 25-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman. That the National Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM) published Thursday.

The two patients were both from the United States, but had no contact with each other. They are treated and it goes well with both, let RIVM know. Close contacts of the two are detected and treated if necessary.

A total of six Dutch people infected with the flu, which officially New Influenza A (H1N1) is called. Last Tuesday, the RIVM announced that a 25-year-old female patient was the fourth Dutch. They just came back from New York and became the first Dutchman to the virus outside of Mexico had been. The RIVM reported when all the coming weeks more repeat travelers expect those infected with the Mexican flu.

Earlier it was already clear that in a 3-year-old child, a 53-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man was infected. They were all in Mexico, and are now restored.

The RIVM advises people after returning from Mexico or the United States within seven days of flu-like symptoms to contact their general practitioner. The doctor then decides in consultation with the health authorities or further research is needed.

Wednesday, the World Health Organization announced that the number of Mexican flu in the world is approaching twenty thousand. The disease has been lit in the top 66 countries certainly. The virus claimed known more than a hundred lives, especially in Mexico.

That's right, there have been no other reports on this. But I assume that reports on the RIVM site are credible. Maybe there is no newsrelease because it is saturday ?

Predicted flu outbreak is no reason to panic

The RIVM predicts a major outbreak of new influenza A (flu Mexican)
in our country.
Earlier this week was already known that for the first time in the Netherlands
virus among humans has been transferred. The RIVM think after the first wave of flu
a few months after which it disappears in the autumn will again emerge.

There is no reason for concern , however, emphasizes the institute. The probability that
someone in the Netherlands to the New Influenza A will die is almost nil.
There
sufficient virus inhibitors in stock, the Netherlands is well prepared for a
larger outbreak than has been the case.

In total, there are
Currently twenty infections in the Netherlands, all they could Friday
simple home treatment and the first patients are already back
better.

Netherlands: "we expect a CFR 5 to 10 times higher than normal flu" , in case of a major outbreak of A/H1N1.

This was said by Roel Coetinho, director of RIVM, this morning on Dutch Radio.

CFR of seasonal flu in the Netherlands is 1 or 2 per thousand cases.

I wonder why he expects that. Nothing in outbreaks elsewhere would predict such a high CFR... unless he means that he expects a mutation toward higher virulence, or he believes the R0 has been exceptionally low everywhere so far?

"Many deaths from the flu '

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 | 03:19 | Last updated: Tuesday, June 16, 2009 | 09:17

ENSCHEDE - The Swine flu could cause five to ten times more deaths
than an ordinary flu wave.
According to the National Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM) can
the death toll to rise to 4000 to 8000. One in three Dutch can get the flu.

According to the Ministry of Health outlines the RIVM 'the ultimate doomsday scenario. " This is only if the virus mutates. "

People who were born in 1957, seem immune to the H1N1 virus. According to Prof. Dr. Roel
Of the RIVM Coutinho, it seems that until 1957 a similar virus by our country and that attracted
Dutch by birth, that natural resistance.

The RIVM does not rule out that schools should close to prevent proliferation. Coutinho "
Children are there close together, there is coughing and sneezing. "The Margrietschool in Woerden
advised a group of parents yesterday to keep their children home after a father and a
students were infected. They made a trip to a petting zoo.

If this is true, the CFR would be between 0.74 and 1.47 a thousand.

Well it is total bullshit.

The current cfr is (WHO numbers) about half a percent, while regular flu takes about half that number.

On average 1000 to 2000 people die each year of seasonal flu in the Netherlands (RIVM numbers).

With the same number of infections that would mean about twice as much will die of the new virus.

But will the number of infections be the same? Of course not.

With a tenfold increase of infections, and the current cfr, we would have 20.000 to 40.000 deaths the coming season.

The cfr of the Spanish flu however, was 2.5 to 5 percent.

So the ministry of Health is talking total bullshit.
