Yes. Even though Bild is the worst tabloid paper you can find, the headline news are correct.

All three people were returning form Mexico (which is a little better news as the cases are still imported and not being infected locally via H2H, but that will not take long).

22 year old women Mexico traveller, confirmed
37 year old women Mexico traveller, confirmed
end 30 year old man (? probable) Mexico traveller, confirmed

Aditional suspect cases elsewhere. Airport Munich is preparing for screening and ifnecessary quarantine for flights from Mexico. (too late guys)

I'm living at 5 km of the German Border, I know Bild ist Scheisse

Nevertheless:
Schon drei Fälle in Deutschland

(Planes coming from Mexico will land on an isolated runway, and all passengers will be checked)

(fourth suspect 'very likely' has swine flu)

Forth case now confirmed in Germany, a woman that already recovered. Not an imported case, so it is H2H in Germany too.
Three in Bavaria, one in Hamburg: four cases in total so far.
rki (Robert Koch institute, our little CDC equivalent) holds a press briefing daily even through the public holidays.

Quick translation from Berlin. Normally there are 1 or 2 cases of flu per month at this time of the year. He is seeing 1 or 2 patients a day who come in wondering if they have swine flu (other viral illnesses were diagnosed).

The 12th case: 27 yr women who had treated a patient with breathing problems in a mexican hospital.

Today, Robert Koch Institut (german institute for the surveillance of infectious diseases in Germany), confirmed two new cases of swine flu in Germany. It's the wife and the son of one of the Mexico-travelers, who had been a confirmed case before. Neither the wife (who had also been in Mexico) nor the son (who had not been in Mexico) had had any flu-symptoms. Actually they had been tested only for scientific reasons. But, as the Robert Koch Institut declared, this could be due to prophylactic intervention with antiviral drugs in these cases.

This result highlights two facts:

First: a high probability of sustained human-to-human-transmission
Second: the possibility of infection without typical symptoms or even asymptomatic infection.

Therefore the risk of spreading the new influenza virus with sustained human-to-human transmission in Europe might be higher then expected.

At the same time, Robert Koch Institut, revised its case definition of new influenza on 15th May 2009 (... resides in a community, where there is a disease outbreak [at least 5 confirmed cases] of new influenza infection...).

http://www.rki.de/cln_109/nn_200120...a__Falldef.html

The epidemiologic aspect of the case definition is important for identifying "suspected cases". Only suspected cases will be isolated and tested.

Up to now there are 14 confirmed cases in Germany.

Tourist dies, possibly of swine flu

By: BangkokPost.com

Published: 19/05/2009

A German woman who was under close watch for possible swine flu infection after she arrived in Thailand has died, Public Health spokesperson Suphan Srithamma said on Tuesday.

A lab test would reveal within 24 hours whether she died of swine flu, Dr Suphan said.

The 59-year-old woman, whose name has been withheld, arrived in Thailand from Germany. She was staying in Prachuap Khiri Khan province and was admitted to a private hospital on May 12. She died on Monday.

According to chief of Bureau of Epidemiology Dr Passakorn Akrasaewee, the woman suffered pneumonia, had high fever and had difficulty in breathing before she was admitted to the hospital.

"There are several reasons that lead to pneumonia, but the swine H1N1 flu virus is among the possible causes," Dr Passakorn said.

She was visiting Thailand with her husband and a child.

Dead German tourist tests positive for swine flu - Update

Tue, 19 May 2009

Bangkok - A 59-year-old German tourist who died of flu-like symptoms at a Thai beach resort was initially tested positive for H1N1 at a lab in Bangkok, but authorities are awaiting further tests before confirming the country's possible first swine-flu fatality.

Police Lieutenant General Somyot Deemak, head of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital, said their lab had detected H1N1 in the woman's body fluids.

He said further tests will be conducted at the Public Health Ministry, with an official announcement of the results expected soon.

The German woman arrived in Thailand, on May 12, showing no flu symptoms, and drove to Hua Hin resort, 130 kilometres south-west of Bangkok, with her husband and their child, Health Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Paichit Walachit said.

On Saturday, she was admitted to Hua Hin Hospital, suffering from a pneumonia and fever. She died Monday night, Paichit said.
Her body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for autopsy to determine if she was infected with H1N1.
Thailand has reported two confirmed cases of H1N1, both Thai nationals who had recently visited Mexico. Both fully recovered after receiving anti-influenza drugs.

There are eight other people still in quarantine at Thai hospitals under observation for suspected swine flu.

Thailand has imposed a host of preventative measures against the spread of H1N1, including the use of heat-seeking devices at the country's main international airports to detect arrivals suffering from fever.

The country has a stockpile of 1.32 million tablets of oseltamivir and the Health Ministry set aside a special budget to buy enough raw materials to produce locally another 2 million tablets.

Tourist died of pneumonia, not swine flu

By: BangkokPost.com and AFP

Published: 19/05/2009 at 02:17 PM

Lab tests confirm that a German tourist who died in Thailand while under surveillance for suspected swine flu was not infected with the A(H1N1) virus, a public health ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

She was put under surveillance on Saturday and she died on Monday night on her way to a Bangkok hospital from the coastal resort of Hua Hin, spokesman Suphan Srithamma said.

The results of laboratory tests to confirm whether she had the virus were known on Wednesday evening.

Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nopamornbodee confirmed that the tests showed that the woman died from pneumonia and ordinary flu.

The woman had arrived in Thailand with her partner and went to Hua Hin last Tuesday. She came down with flu-like symptoms a few days later, he said. She was admitted to hospital.

Thailand has confirmed two cases of swine flu so far, both Thai nationals who caught the virus in Mexico. Both are now fully recovered, according to health officials.

The health ministry said 21 people were currently under surveillance for suspected swine flu.

The dead woman's body was being kept at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok. The 14 medical staff who had worked on her body were briefly held in quarantine then released after the swine flu tests on the woman's body proved negative.

Husband and one child of the Düsseldorf case are also confirmed H1N1 positive. The second child does not display any symptoms. The patients are isolated in a hospital. Contacts are traced and the sick child`s kindergarden will be closed for one week.

It will be interesting to see whether there is any spread into the community, e.g. the kindergarden, work contacts.
Now Germany has a total of 17 confirmed cases.

German man in Egypt with swine flu symptoms

• The authorities in Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate have hospitalised a German tourist who had arrived at Hurghada airport in the area with swine flu-like symptoms, according to a local newspaper. The man said he had visited a pig farm 10 days earlier in Germany. Medical samples have been sent to laboratories in Cairo for testing.

http://www.irinnews.org/report.aspx?ReportID=84539

The follow-up would be interesting if the man is indeed confirmed H1N1 positive. Could he have been infected by the pigs? Or is swine influenza presently circulating in a German pig herd? Questions, no answers.

Germany confirms its 21st H1N1 infection in a Cologne student who returned from a trip to New York.

A 47 year old businessman who also travelled to New York is a highly probable case. He is also confirmed.*

Two maybe three university students who toured the US with their professor are also suspected to have contracted swine flu. Final confirmation on these cases is awaited from the Robert Koch Institute.

A marine aboard the frigate Sachsen returning from Halifax (Canada) came down with influenza-like illness. H1N1 confirmation is pending. Apparently all marines on board were tamiflued.
(All persons are recovering. Their contacts are observed or in contact with physicians.)

Over the weekend more swine flu cases were detected in Germany. The presumably latest case is that of a four year old Lower Saxony boy (East Frisia) who travelled with his parents in New Mexico USA. It will be Germany`s 30th case. So far 6 in-country transmissions were reported. Mostly family contacts and one healthcareworker.

The RkI confirmed 6 more H1N1 infections. Lower Saxony confirmed an additional case in a student returning from the USA. One of the confirmed cases contracted his infection in England. So England might become an inner- European transmission hotspot with all the travelling going on and about to resume with the summer vacation to start in the latter part of June. Germany`s momentary total is 38 official cases.

Germany has another case of confirmed swine flu in Bavaria. Interestingly the two cases from Lower Saxony are not mentioned on the RKI webpage. Whatever that means I do not know.

According to local media Germany has 8 to 10 new swine flu cases. Each state announces its infection numbers separately and then obviously later on to the RKI. So there is a central information back lag.
The total should be ~ 61 cases if the two US soldiers stationed in Landshut will includedin the total count. Some more soldiers are under investigation.

teenage-cluster of in-country-transmission in Wuerzburg

The 16-year old girl from Wuerzburg, who had been on a travel to Argentina, where she had cought novel Influenza A (H1N1), which was confirmed on June 7, 2009, obviously is the index-case for at least 5 confirmed cases of in country-transmission in Wuerzburg. She had been on parties and thereby had infected at least five teenagers. Another 20 teenagers who also had been on that party are still under investigation of the local Health authorities.

More swine flu cases in Germany.
In Düsseldorf three members of a Japanese family got infected and a woman in the Hunsrück area. So the momentary German tally should be 82 cases. More are expected.

A swine flu cluster in Cologne. The index case is a 13 year old high school student. Three of her friends also have swine flu. I do not link to the paper. I think at the end of the day the RKI will provide robust information on these cases.
