Illinois 3 confirmed 96 suspected
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/...-050309.article

Illinois swine flu cases increase to 99
May 3, 2009

FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported Sunday morning the number of H1N1 flu cases in Illinois has increased to 99.

At 8 a.m. Sunday, Illinois reported 96 possible cases of H1N1 flu (Swine Flu) and three confirmed cases, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Web site.

A confirmed case is defined as a person with an acute febrile respiratory illness with laboratory confirmed infection. A probable case is defined as a person with an acute febrile respiratory illness who is positive for influenza A, but negative for H1 and H3, the IDPH said.

The department reported only 88 cases on Saturday morning.

Eight additional probable cases were found in Chicago, two more in Will County and DeKalb County reported its first probable case, the IDPH said.

The number of confirmed cases remained at two in Chicago and one in DuPage County.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is scheduled to complete deployment of 25 percent of the supplies in the Strategic National Stockpile to all states in the continental United States by Sunday, according to the CDC Web site. The supplies and medicines will help states respond to local outbreaks.

The Federal Government and manufacturers have begun the process of developing a vaccine against the H1N1 flu virus, the CDC said.

The number of probable Illinois cases include: Chicago (32), Cook County (28), DuPage County (11), Kane County (11), Will County (7), Lake County (2), DeKalb County (1), Kendall County (1), McHenry County (1), Sangamon County (1) and Winnebago County (1), the IDPH said.

The CDC reported 226 confirmed case of H1N1 Flue nationally, including one fatality in Texas.

At least 16 schools in the Chicago area have closed as a preventative measure after probable cases of the flu were detected.

In Chicago, Chicago Public Schools officials announced that Joyce Kilmer School in Rogers Park will remain closed until further notice. The school was closed Wednesday when a 12-year-old student was determined to be a probable case of swine flu, and officials noticed lower than normal attendance.

CPS is monitoring attendance at all schools to determine whether more will close.

The IDPH offered the following tips to prevent the spread of H1N1 flu:

-- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash after use.

-- Wash your hands often with soap and water.

-- Avoid touching your eye, nose or mouth.

-- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

A hotline allowing Illinois residents to access information about the H1N1 flu will be available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and will be staffed by volunteers, according to a release from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

The operators will answer basic, non-medical questions released to the outbreak at (866) 848-2094. The IEMA also has an updated Web site residents can check at Ready.Illinois.go

Italy confirms total of 4 flu cases

Italy reports 2 more swine flu cases

Health officials say Italy has two more cases of swine flu, bringing the total number of infected patients in the country to four.

The Health Ministry said Monday that a 16-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy who recently returned from Mexico have been treated with antiviral medicine in Rome hospitals.

The ministry confirmed Italy's first case last week, a 50-year-old man in Tuscany who returned from Mexico in late April and who has already recovered. A second case, that of a 25-year-old man, was announced Sunday.

The Iowa Health Agency does tests on 548 samples and I think one school in Marshall Town was closed because of possible cases among some students.

from CDC Press Briefing in progress...
Quote:
A probable case is somebody who has flu-like symptoms and is tested and comes up negative for known strains. Almost all of those end up being confirmed.

There are 286 confirmed cases in 36 states. There are over 700 probable cases in a total of 44 states. This is likely an underestimation of the total cases across the country.

1:14 Median age of confirmed cases: 16 years. 35 known hospitalizations in the U.S., one reported death. 62% of confirmed cases are under 18 years old.

... snip

1:22 It’s important for an area to know if they have the disease in their community, because that can guide some of the actions they take. It’s also important for us as we study the disease. But once you have widespread disease, the numbers become much less important, because you should already be taking action. We’re going to focus less on the numbers going forward.

MC-
I believe the 1 case in NC will turn to 2 cases today as the spouse of the first vicitm is also "probable" but is SIP'd with the first person (now).
We also have about 6 other cases of "probable".

Got a question -
According to local sources ONLY cases deemed severe are being tested here.
According to most reports the flu cases so far are no more serious than seasonal flu's.
Are we seriously under reporting cases ?
And if so, why bother tracking cases?

Yes, even according to the CDC these numbers unquestionably represent a serious undercount. That was the whole point of the "Rate of Testing versus Rate of Spread" Discussion thread.

As you say, only a small fraction of even the small minority being tested are reported, as most of the samples are waiting in a long CDC queue (didn't we hear over 700 probable cases are waiting for CDC confirmation?). Many states are now only testing severe cases, and most are telling mildly ill people to stay home and not to visit a doctor.

And the CDC said yesterday that they now believe swine flu is established in every state in the US, so they'll be focusing less energy on testing.

Because we can? No seriously, it's a decent way to keep up with breaking news during the day (we add reported cases not yet on CDC or WHO lists).

Maybe in a few days (after most states have reported initial confirmations) we should just start tracking new countries with confirmed cases?

The CDC will begin reporting "probable" cases of flu in addition to confirmed cases to give a better sense of the size of the US epidemic, acting director Dr. Richard Besser said Monday. In addition to the 286 confirmed cases, there are more than 700 probable cases in the United States.

You know better than most how I like lists

Since this seems to be no more serious than seasonal flu perhaps what we should look at is the rate of rise in the number of cases. Doesn't the seasonal flu kill about 3,000 per year?
Wouldn't the infection RATE give us an idea of it's virulence?
Could it be tracked within a country as "x" per thousand citizens?

I'm curious because as of now I see more cases but LESS deaths per reported case - that of course can change - especially if it re-emerges in the fall during regular flu season...,.

Just a thought......

Seasonal flu in the US kills closer to 36,000 (though I'm not exactly sure which deaths get attributed to seasonal flu versus underlying preconditions).

I don't think this late-season swine flu can be compared to seasonal flu because it won't have the "benefit" of a full flu season replete with cold weather and huge numbers of cases. We'll have to wait for next year if it's still around. I'm not waiting with enthusiasm.

Confirmed North Carolina H1N1 cases jump to 7

Posted: May 5, 2009 05:19 PM

Updated: May 5, 2009 05:19 PM

RALEIGH, NC (AP) - The number of confirmed swine flu cases in North Carolina has jumped to seven as federal lab tests verified what state officials had suspected.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday there are four confirmed cases in Craven County and a related case in Carteret County.

Officials have said four of those people work together and got sick after one of them traveled to New York City.

The fifth is a child of one of the four adults. The state also added a second confirmed case in Onslow County, where a man who had traveled to Texas was identified as the first confirmed case over the weekend. Officials suspect his wife has the virus.

Gov. Beverly Perdue said the state feels good about its ability to respond

Default Colorado now at 17

http://www.dailycamera.com/news/200...tive-swine-flu/

DENVER — The Centers for Disease Control says seven more Coloradans have tested positive for swine flu, bringing the state total to 17.

The Colorado Department of Public Health said Wednesday it did not have any further details on the newest cases.

Excel Academy Charter School in Arvada and Park Lane Elementary School in Aurora remained closed Wednesday after students there tested positive for the H1N1 virus earlier this week.

The Department of Health's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ned Calonge, says the number of cases reported are "just a snapshot of the cases" that exist because many people who contract H1N1 do not suffer symptoms serious enough to visit a doctor.

Thanks!

Added latest CDC update (including CO@17) and WHO Update #17 above.

Not : yesterday the CDC reported having "thousands" of untested Probable cases, where 98% of Probables will ultimately be confirmed. The above case # are, therefore, known to be be grossly understated.

California.................. 69 cases {CDC lists 67 -- state doing own tests -- severe cases only}

Does that include the sailors and US Armed Forces?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While the global crisis continued to abate, the US Navy cancelled an aid mission to the South Pacific yesterday after a sailor on the vessel scheduled to take the trip developed swine flu.
The navy said the warship's crew member became ill with swine flu and 50 others showed symptoms, leading military officials to cancel the deployment to Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands as part of the US's Pacific Partnership humanitarian program.
Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander John Daniels said the one confirmed case of swine flu and 50 others with flu symptoms were aboard USS Dubuque, an amphibious transport dock ship stationed in San Diego, California.
The vessel had been scheduled to deploy on a four-month humanitarian mission in the South Pacific to provide military and civil assistance to countries in the region.
The 16,500-tonne ship usually travels with a crew of 396 sailors, 24 officers, 90 staff and a detachment of 840 marines.
The ship was to have left on June 1 on a humanitarian mission to the South Pacific
for assistance on projects such
as medical and construction operations.
Nine A(H1N1) cases have been confirmed among the US armed forces, including five with the navy. All of the people who have been infected are in the US, the Pentagon says.
