US Government Domain Names

21 Sept 04: Michael Ravnitzky, a regular contributor to The Memory Hole, has supplied a third now-forbidden list of dot-gov domains. This one is from April 2000, and, unlike the others here, it lists exactly who registered each domain (including point of contact). (Interestingly, some of the entities that registered dot-gov names are private corporations. What's that about?) He received the list through a FOIA request in the pre-9/11 era, back when a list of government domain names wasn't considered a threat to national security.

The list is here.

>>> In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the General Services Administration has refused to release the list of names in the dot-gov domain (eg, whitehouse.gov, fbi.gov, etc.). They claim that such information is "Sensitive but Unclassified," but they are not giving a specific reason for this determination, much less citing a FOIA exemption, as required under federal law.

But a fairly recent (12 Sept 2002) list of government domain names and servers is already available, thanks to the University of Toronto Network Development and Implementation Website. We're presenting it below. An older, but longer, list of dot-gov domains is here.

Interesting, but I would rather have a listing of all of the Ip ranges and which .gov agency has them.

There was an automated one on the net, dragosomething or other, but it went belly up.

You would be surprised how many Class Bs and Class C ranges the .gov has scattered all over the IP space.
