Heres a site that some may find useful. Especially if one has to BO or if you want to leave signs for friends to follow without being obvious. Hobo signs (http://www.angelfire.com/folk/famoustramp/signs.html)

That was cool! Where were the marks made so owners didn't see them ?

I'm afraid I don't know. If I were to put up a hobo sign I'd probably use the back of a road sign. If I had to use one to tell others in my party something and I didn't want them to miss it I might spray it on a road. Ought to work as long as strangers didn't understand them.

They put them on mail box posts, fence posts anywhere they could leave a mark that was easily seen by anyone knowing where to look for them.

I'm sure that most just assumed it was graffitti and paid no attention to it which is why the secret code language was developed and used by this specific group nationwide.

I would think that it's universal just as drug addicts do to signal one another without the LEO's knowing such as the right pant leg cuffed means I'm selling and the left means I'm buying.

I do think that this is something that survivalist should really consider. We can develop our own language. LOL We could even use their language to our benefit such as the "home well protected" logo on our own mailboxes or street signs.

About the only place I have seen them is in books and recently on the Internet and I have looked.

More urban legend now I would think.

It kind of remonds me of the modern "hobo sign" warchalking. That is, marking an area to show others that there is a wireless access point, if it is open or closed, how fast it is, and its name.

Plenty of hype, never seen one of those other. There would have been times when that would have been helpful.
