I started wondering what that black powder was under the onion storage.

Well I caution you to look into this a bit for your safty.

Some onions seem to come from the store with this black mold already on them.
I decided to look into what it was and if it could cause illness.

I did not like what I found out.. DO not inhale the black fungus dust !

Below are some of the links and info, I found out about this Black mold.

Black mold of onion is caused by the fungus Aspergillus niger

Possible Biological Warfare Agent
To furthermore stress the significance of the component aflatoxin as a known carcinogen by the government, review the following expert on Iraq's declaration of biological weapons in 1998 according to this SIPRI fact sheet,
The discovery that Iraq was researching aflatoxin, not a traditional BW candidate, was a cause for some surprise. It is a carcinogen, the effects of which manifest themselves only after many years, and several Western experts have rationalized this Iraqi programme only in terms of genocidal goals. If aflatoxin were used against the Kurds, for instance, it would be impossible definitively to prove the use of BW once the symptoms emerged. Another possible explanation is its potential use as an immune suppressant, making victims more susceptible to other agents. However, the aflatoxin declaration may also hide other aspects of Iraq's BW programme: according to Iraq's depositions, the production programme never encountered any mishap (as other parts of the BW programme had) and, to judge from the declared time-frame for the total amount produced, production could never have stopped, even for cleaning of the equipment. This raises the suspicion that Iraq declared an excessive amount of aflatoxin in order to disguise the fact that other, more destructive agents had been produced in greater quantities

Research Interests

The research program for which I am responsible involves the nature and management of diseases of vegetables grown on the organic soils of New York. The investigations (past and present) have focused on studies that range from basic (biology of the pathogens and the diseases) to applied (control procedures under field conditions) on diseases that continue to be economically important or that recently have become important in the state. Since joining the department my graduate students, postdoctoral associates, visiting professors, research technicians, and I have conducted research on onion, lettuce, and celery diseases. Most of the research conducted to date has been published in peer reviewed international journals, proceedings of research conferences and workshops, book chapters, and college and department reports. Presently the major areas of research involve studies on the biology and management of Botrytis squamosa, Alternaria porri, and Stemphylium vesicarium which cause leaf blights of onion, Aspergillus niger causing black mold of onion, and bacterial diseases of onion, especially the canker and sour skin disease caused by Burkholderia cepacia. Laboratory, glasshouse, and growth chamber experiments are conducted in Ithaca and field studies presently are conducted in East Ithaca and in Orange and Oswego Counties in areas of commercial fields provided by grower cooperators. Since 1961 the Orange County Vegetable Improvement Cooperative Association has provided annual financial support and since 1964 a laboratory-residence (Orange County Vegetable Research Center) for graduate students in my program. The laboratory-residence has been utilized for research studies conducted in the county during the summer months. During the past 5 years a strong cooperative program with researchers in the Department of Plant Breeding has been developed utilizing recently identified sources of resistance to Botrytis leaf blight in an onion breeding program. In this program the utilization of reduced fungicide rates integrated with genetic resistance for control of Botrytis leaf blight also is being investigated. It is planned that future studies in this cooperative onion breeding program also will target several other onion diseases for which sources of resistance have been identified.

Aflatoxin - a potent carcinogen from the fungus Aspergillus; can be produced and stored for use as a bioweapon, which is any weapon usable in biological warfare - "they feared use of the smallpox virus as a bioweapon".

The term BIOWEAPON includes these common terms :::
Bioarm -Biological Weapon - Bioweapon - Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) - a weapon that kills or injures civilian as well as military personnel (nuclear and chemical and biological weapons)

Aspergillus niger. The 3rd most common Aspergillus fungi associated with disease and the most common of any Aspergillus species in nature due to it’s ability to grow on a wide variety of substrates. This species may cause a “fungal ball”, which is a condition where the fungus actively proliferates in the human lung, forming a ball. It does so without invading the lung tissue.

It is also EXTREMELY unlikely to be deadly unless the person or animal is already gravely compromised. It is a problem at turkey farms because of the very inhumane, crowded conditions. It is not something that people develop even though they are commonly exposed to it.
