Does anyone else grow Kitty grass (wheat) for their cats? Once the last days of Fall starts in I have a pot on my kitchen window sill and start a new one every 3 wks. Cinnamon always lets me know when the next one is ready to uncover. Even tho its covered with handi-wrap and in a dark knook, she knows when it's ready and trys to knock things over to get at it!!! I've also seen her just check it out within the first few days of planting it.

My vet says it's great for her, contrary to what some people think, that eating grass is an indication of an upset stomach and makes them vomit, it isn't true. Cats like grass just like we would a salad. If cats have been observed eating grass and then vomiting, it's probably the type of grass or chem./pesticides on it. We make sure that the area our furkids ramble have no "additives" to the area.

Anyways, we have been growing kitty grass for our kitty's for yrs. and I have been wondering if anyone else does this?

I grow oat grass for my cats constantly. If I didn't keep a supply on hand they would kick my butt! :buttkick: I buy the seeds by the lb., from a cat supply place, because it's cheaper to supply their habit that way. ;)

DarkRose,

Thanks for the idea of oats. I bet she'll love it. If I didn't keep it going, she'd be eating my houseplants. I gave seeds to a friend and she planted a large flat, which when it was mature..her kitty used it to take naps in and munch.

Yammy,

They'll love you. Do it for a before Christmas treat. The seeds usually mature in 3-4 days.

having horses, I have oat grass growing almost yr round except the coldest winters. I just grab a handfuls every few days and call Kitty kitty and I have pictures I;ve taken called "grazing kitties" it is all heads down butts up and munching the grass!

I can not grow cat nip.. soon as it breaks the ground.. it's gone!.. I grow some outside the kitty area, and then dry it and have it for special occasions.

We grow it in the fields when we can, dry it too.

Merlin has made two things very clear.

1. We can pet him but we won't get anything for it.

2. We are not his owner, we are his servants.

I have lots of catnip here growing wild, and I did dry some for my boys, they just love it!

My cat phoned Asa Hutchinson on me when I gave him some catnip. Looked at it like it was poison and walked away. He's the first cat I've ever had that didn't become immediately addicted to the stuff.

Freaky friday moment...(On Thursday) I just clicked on this thread for the first time and saw it was about "kitty grass". I just bought Stanley, my 15 yr.old Russian Blue look- alike, a pre-seeded kit, a couple of days ago. As I read the first few lines of your thread, I glanced over at the plant shelf and YEA ! "kitty grass" has sprung forth, about 1/2 ". Stanley has become very depressed because winter is here and he can't walk out to the garden bed where his catnip bushes are. The old boy spends most of his summer days out in the "bed" laying right in the middle of the bush and 'dozing. What a drug addict ! No excercise makes old cat all constipated. Had a lovely "episode" the other night, ya know WHAT was stuck half in half out.YUCK. Soon he will have grass to chew. Thanx, for the info about "growing your own". Much cheaper and more plentiful.
* Found living catnip at pet shop tonight. He woke up from a dead sleep, when I walked in the door. Happy, happy stoned cat, right now... :D

LOL, I have plentiful catnip that goes wild here ... I gave my "boys' some last night, very stoned kitty came up to bed where SO and I were talking and started to bat at his own shadow on the wall.... I about cried lauging so hard. This of course lead us to do the childrens finger animals on the wall. What a great time!

Pets give us so much!

I was just reading today that only about two thirds of cats have the necessary genes to get high on catnip. The remaining one third don't 'get it' so to speak. I've had cats that had no reaction to catnip before and one that positively got stoned on the stuff. I had to fence in my catnip to keep him out.

.....Alan.

Three out of four of my cats get high on catnip. The fourth comes running in excitement when the others get their fix and looks at me in extreme disappointment because he DGI. I always feel guilty cause I don't have a treat for him. He also doesn't like people food as snacks nor does he like cat treats. All he wants is cat food and being brushed.

Our oldest cat loved sweet flowers, especially roses, peonies and lilacs. Throw a couple of peonies on the floor and she would go nuts.

Santa brought my kitties a self-brushing post. Its a large half oval shaped brush mounted on a platform, place to insert cat-nip, too. They could walk thru it like a car wash. DH assembled it for them and there the 3 of 'em sat looking at it like WTF? Well, smart ol' Stanley walked over to it and taadaa first rub up against it , and he's hooked.(Catnip not inserted yet) Course he thinks it's his, smacks other cats away, but now , just for spite of Stan, the others are all merrily brushing themselves. Now if only they can get to their fat bellies, I could put the real brush away. :D
BTW~ Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas !

occupant,

I'm a sucker for tried and true things that furkids like. Cinnamon really really likes paper bags and they are getting scarce to find. I've resorted to a gift bag from the Dollar Store a few times, just to give her a treat. But, those d.o.g.s. :P tend to get in the act and destroy them.

Where did you find this "self-brushing post". I get 3 speciality pet catalogs and never have noticed something like this.??

There is a pet store chain, here in Michigan, called Pet Supplies Plus. Been eyeing it ( the brush post) for awhile. My furkids are old and spoiled. After last weeks stuck poo-poo experience, I dropped the twenty bucks, for it. Ol' Stanley, usually just lies around and grooms himself AND the girl kitty, too, so his old intestines are busy making furBRICKS. A daily dose of vaseline and frequent brushing has nipped that in the bud, I Hope ! Hopefully he'll brush himself, once in awhile.(Cool. Girl cat, Inky, just used it!)
Maybe, Pet Supplies Plus has an online catalog.Didn't keep the box it came in, so I don't have the name brand. If you can't find one, PM me. I'll fix ya up.

It was a fresh "Kitty Can't Cope Sack", so too much to resist.

Meanwhile, Joe splurged on a couple of remote controlled toys for them.

at least not the very stale, old stuff I have lying around. I have one that flakes out on an as of now unidentified herb. I was dusting off spice/herb bottles the other week & she was going utterly strange, (okay - more so than usual), on the kitchen floor. Ever see an adult cat do front rolls?

Ahh a mystery herb! Do a smell test with her and let us know what she responds to!

"remote controlled toys"..... kool. Cinnamon loves those real little wind up toys that just walk across the floor. That is, along as the d.o.g.s. don't just have to get in on it.
