Save em. You can trade em in at blue rhino(found outside home depots and am/pm minute marts)for the new opd ones. Sure it will cost you a bit more for the propane, but you're getting a refillable cylinder with the deal. Just make sure the tank you're getting in return doesn't have a proprietary valve(some Blue Rhino tanks do from what I've heard). New cylinder alone costs around 24 bucks here, and thats empty. When you finally use up the propane just get it filled at your local gas station,if they sell propane that is. I love finding old cylinders for free!

Hey SS how does it work for tanks that are past their license date?. Up here all the tanks are stamped with a manufacture date and the stations will not refill them if they are past the 10 yr mark. Will BR take 10+ yr old tanks in trade?

Ed I'm afraid I don't know how it works in Canada. You could always try,the worst they could say is no. Then try somewhere else, somewhere that there is a green checker to take the tank :D

Most of the Blu Rhino dealers around here are smart and look for the "star" shaped v. "triangle" shaped knobs (OPD equipped). (Star bad, triangle good) They get penalized for taking the older ones.
You can use it as a service if your bottle is getting near the expiration date. (12 years here) Just try to get the newest one possible.
Here, dealers will also fill Blue Rhino bottles. However, Blue Rhino puts out certain models with valves that only Blue Rhino can fill. (The mark looks like a triagle on the side of the valve. Detailed pictures are on the cage with the bottles.)

Thought I'd add that the local Home Depot is wise to this trick. If you have an old tank they'll let you upgrade to an OPD tank for a couple extra bucks.

I've see some Wal-marts do it too. Read what it says on the outside of the propane cage. Costs a couple extra bucks.
My old ones are long gone! :)

You can always saw it in half and make a smoker out of it. (I hope you know how to make sure it's empty first.)
