Jan 25, 2005 — Some emergency supplies that the Homeland Security Department and the Homeownership Alliance urge people to have on hand in case of terrorist attack or natural disaster:

Water. Plan on using at least one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation.

Food. Choose foods that won't go bad quickly and do not have to be heated or cooked, such as peanut butter, cereal or crackers.

Can opener, cups, eating utensils.

Anything that will help keep the air you breathe clean air, such as a face mask that can filter particles. In an emergency, anything that fits snugly over the nose and mouth, like dense-weave cotton material, can help.

Flashlight.

Battery-powered radio.

Utility knife.

Garbage bags.

Plastic sheeting.

Duct tape.

Extra cash.

Identification.

Extra batteries rotate extra batteries periodically to be sure they work when needed.

First-aid kit.

Warm clothing or blankets in case the heating system goes out.

Unique supplies, such as diapers or pet food.
