Washington, DC, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Groups concerned with suppression of religious freedom called on U.S. President Bush Monday to take swift action against newly named severe violators.
In a letter, a coalition of religious leaders, religious freedom advocates and human rights activists asked the president "to act swiftly and appropriately" in regard to Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam, which the United States recently designated as "countries of particular concern for severe violations of religious freedom."
"The president has an extraordinary and historic opportunity to demonstrate that the United States is interested in acting on religious freedom as well as speaking about it," said Joseph K. Grieboski, president of the Institute on Religion and Public Policy.
