Could someone tell me how to increase my virtual memory on my computer.
I have Windows XP, with 256 MB of Ram. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help. (I'm not a gamer so I that is not the problem).

Virtual memory increases itself dynamically. It takes as much as it needs, and it takes it from the hard drive, not RAM. Virtual memory tends to flagellate your hard drive and fragment your files, so I shut it off and set up a fixed cache. Instructions on how to do that are here:

Single simplest, cheapest and easiest thing you can do to improve the performance of your system is buy more RAM. If you can, stick 512 MB or even 1 GB into that system, Pepper, and watch it fly.

Thanks AO. I've been thinking about buying more Ram. Now I'm going to.

I'll second A0, XP on 256 megs must be horribly slow... RAM is getting cheaper now too...

is it or are you humoring .06? i went there and noticed that XP is not on the recommended list. it's an old document. for fun, i tried it out. i have win98 and 64m of memory and like breaking things.

i turned on system monitor to see how things were going. i watched as processor usage went from 30 to 40 to 50% plateaus. needless to say, i wasn't going to hang around with that and watch the system crash, so i undid the changes and rebooted. i now get a steady processor usage of 25%.

you needn't worry about virtual memory so long as you haven't used up RAM.

do you know if you were indeed out of RAM? also, increasing RAM doesn't help if all of what you have is not completely utilized.

are you using Adaware? how about Giant Labs spyware scanner? i got it yesterday. very nice for free.

I had added more ram recently but had never adjusted anything. I went in and manually upped the amount and that seems to have helped :)

is it or are you humoring I was being sarcastic. I forgot to add this... :re: ....... ;)

The day I posted this, I had a windows warning that I was low on virtual memory. It said something about Windows was securing more Virtual memory for me. Next my system went bonkers. I've never had this happen before.

I have system mechanic and it checks my system for spyware. I haven't heard of the one you mention. I'll check it out. Thanks for replying.

m31:

I have Win98SE and 128 Mb of RAM. The virtual memory 'scratch pad' useage is usually around 150-250 Mb, so it is always exceeding the amount of available RAM and flagellating the hard disk with VM enabled. I had it set up for a 250 Mb fixed cache and occasionally got an 'Out of virtual memory' error msg, so I upped it to 300 Mb, and that works great. My processor usage is quite low. The reaction you got to setting up a fixed cache tells me that you either did something wrong, or there is something seriously wrong with your system.

if it's serious, it isn't obvious. :)

In Win98 you click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System. Click the Performance tab, then the Virtual Memory button.

But more RAM is what you want.
