Any of you have any experience with the IM2 (http://www.im2.com/) (instant messaging program)? It's free and includes video & audio chat but darn if I can get it to function without crashing not only the program but my pc as well.

The premise is that IM2 is like Trillian in that you can have 5 different chat clients all in one program (AOL, Y!, MSN, IRC & ICQ)

Each time I uninstall it and reinstall it, I get a bit further into configuring things before "the crash" but it's a PITA.
I don't know if it's the program, me, my pc or a combo of all 3.

If I even so much as "test" the cam function, I crash. I can "test" the audio and all is fine however.

Another peculiarity is that it seems that each time you go to connect to the chat medium of choice it "connects" not only to that program but then a dialog bar pops up on the lower right and one by one it connects to each individual entry in your contact list as well! It actually shows each contact name and the progress bar of "connecting" to the names and then it slides back into obscurity once the "connection" is made.

I then proceeded to send an IM (they call it SMS) to one person on my contact list and well, the inevitable crash occured, sigh!

Furthermore, upon each crash, it takes all the previous settings with it! Not only that but the actual accts are gone too! I had to reestablish everything all over again each crash. What a waste of time.

The only reason I was even venturing into IM2 was because of the inability of Y! instant messaging to function properly when using its cam feature. This happens on my dial-up pc and also on a fellow chatter's cable connection.

If none of you are familiar with the quirks of IM2, do you know of another FREE chat program that allows for FREE cam/audio features? Even if it doesn't include all 5 of the most popular chat mediums of AOL, Y!, MSN, IRC & ICQ, I'd be happy and settle for 1 that actually worked w/o all the quirks. Otherwise, I just might have to spring for the paid version of Trillian and hope it's cam features don't constantly crash like Y! and IM2.

(again, here's the IM2 link (http://www.im2.com/))

According to Tech Support, the new/improved version of IM2 will be out January 5th, 2005 and "all will be well".

I certainly hope so

Sage, I use MSN messenger, it does voice and webcam flawlessly for me... The only PITA is that not very many people use it... I finally got irritated after my Brother in law tried every IM client there was and MSN was where I stuck (along with most of my family). You might give it a try...

I use Yahoo the most. I chat weekly with my brother who lives in Wisconsin...after much trial and error, that seems to be the most stable, best quality for sound/voice and video.

Although Skype is a little bit better for sound/voice.

Thx for the input, Larred. I've used MSN, too. But you see, the beauty of Trillian, IM2 and other such "multi" chat programs is that you don't have to download all 5 of the most commonly used chat mediums. Trilian, IM2 et al, incorporate ALL into just 1. You'd be able to chat w/family & friends no matter which one of the top 5 they used. I love Trillian but don't have the money to pay for the paid version which would allow for cam/audio so I use their free version. IM2's is free but WITH cam/audio....just not working up to snuff right now

And WOW!, Yammy, I'm surprised to hear your good fortune with Y!. It freezes constantly & then crashes so much on my system that it's a real PITA. I use it too but sure wish it was more reliable. Maybe its just my computer then? I thought it was because I was on dial-up but I know of some cable modem users who run into the same problem.

I guess I'm going to hold out to see if IM2's promises of bug fixes holds true come Jan. and if not, I'll have to shell out the dough for Trillian I suppose.

Thx for your help guys.

Sage, I'm familiar with Trillian, I tried one of it's earlier versions and something about it irritated me (I don't remember what) because I'm still using MSN. You did ask if there was any messenger that does audio and video for free, MSN fits that. As far as one that will handle multiple clients AND do audio and video, dunno... At least with MSN you could have something until the new IM2 comes out in January...

I only use MSN, personally. I've always had good luck with it.
