Zeppelin to Get Grammy

Joplin, Lewis also to receive lifetime achievement awards

Led Zeppelin, Jerry Lee Lewis and the late Janis Joplin are among those slated to be honored with the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys on February 13th at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

The other recipients are jazz pianist Jelly Roll Morton, country pioneers the Carter Family, soul hitmakers the Staples Singers, country star Eddy Arnold, jazz drummer Art Blakey, composer Morton Gould and blues pianist Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins.

Songwriter extraordinaire Hoagy Carmichael, Soul Train creator Don Cornelius, Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion and recording artist and radio personality Dr. Billy Taylor will receive the Trustees Award, presented to important figures in music who contribute in a non-performing capacity. Producer Phil Ramone (Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel) will be honored with a technical Grammy.

"The Lifetime Achievement, Trustees and Technical Grammy Awards recognize music people who have made a lasting contribution to culture around the world," Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in a statement. "These profoundly inspiring figures are being honored as legendary performers and archetypal musicians, cultural ambassadors and technical visionaries. Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come."

"Stairway to Heaven" is consistently voted the #1 all time favorite rock song.

Don't think that's my favorite, but Jimmy Page sure is :)

Hail, hail rock and roll
Deliver me from the days of old
Long live rock and roll
The beat of the drums, loud and bold
Rock, rock, rock and roll
The feeling is there, body and soul.
--Chuck Berry, circa 1957

"Stairway to Heaven" is consistently voted the #1 all time favorite rock song. Don't think it's my favorite...

It's surely one of the best, but not my favorite either. From hundreds of rock hits, it's impossible to narrow them down and say such-and-such is the greatest or the most popular ever. Audience tastes and preferences vary enormously.

Some of my favorite oldies, in no particular order, include:

Hey Jude -- Beatles
Birthday -- Beatles
Ruby Tuesday -- Rolling Stones
Brown Sugar -- Rolling Stones
What'd I Say -- Ray Charles
It Ain't Me Babe -- The Turtles
She'd Rather Be with Me -- The Turtles
Mony, Mony -- Tommy James & the Shondells
Crimson & Clover -- Tommy James & the Shondells
I Think W're Alone Now -- Tommy James & the Shondells
Good Vibrations -- Beach Boys
Help Me, Rhonda -- Beach Boys
Respect -- Aretha Franklin
American Pie -- Don McLean
House of the Rising Sun -- Animals
Johnny B. Goode -- Chuck Berry
Soul Man -- Sam & Dave
Hold On! I'm Comin' -- Sam & Dave
Piano Man -- Billy Joel
Uptown Girl -- Billy Joel
Me & Bobby McGee -- Janis Joplin
Maggie Mae -- Rod Stewart
Like A Rolling Stone -- Bob Dylan
Oh, Pretty Woman -- Roy Orbison
Words of Love -- The Mamas & the Papas
Go Where You Wanna Go -- The Mamas & the Papas
California Dreaming -- The Mamas & the Papas
Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - Jerry Lee Lewis
Old Time Rock & Roll - Bob Seger
We Will Rock You - Queen
Rave On -- Buddy Holly
Lucille -- Little Richard
Good Golly, Miss Molly -- Little Richard
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road -- Elton John
Born In The USA -- Bruce Springsteen
You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' -- Righteous Brothers
My Sweet Lord - George Harrison
Be My Baby -- The Ronettes

Well, well, it's about time my boys got the recognition they deserve !My "boys" being Led Zeppelin. Yup, I'm a Led-Head for 35 years now. I've seen 'em several times before their untimely demise due to the death of drummer extrordinaire John Bonham. Their heartbeat was gone, so they could not continue as Led Zeppelin. Their music was as provacative as it was cutting edge.To quote" Alot of kids lost their innocence listening to Led Zeppelin, and some lost their virginity as well" "Sex dripped out of every cut, like the sweetest of ripe juices".As Nanna stated above, Stairway to Heaven" has consistently been voted #1 most requested song, for almost 30 years!Their recently released live DVD compilation"How the West Was Won"debuts atop the Billboard 200 and holds that position for 6 consecutive weeks. This from a band who has been broken up for over 23 yrs !
Their solo careers, post Led Zeppelin, soared as well. Robert plant as being the most sucessful. His music is still diverse and cutting edge. Every lyric tells a story. He is very concerned about the welfare of the earth and the plight of the peoples. Both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page have been very active in various causes and generous contributions to the ones they represent, of which there are many, mostly in the U.K. but they both donated signed guitars for Hurricane Charley Relief Fund. While jimmy Page is very involved with his Action for Brazil's Children Trust and has a safe house in Brazil for streetchildren, Robert Plant will be releasing a new CD upcoming in March.Heres kudos for Janis Joplin and Jerry Lee, too ! Well deserved, I say !

Judy Lyn-Del Rey's husband refused her posthumous Nebula Award because she didn't believe in them.

As he points out, what good does it do to honor the dead? I think they'd enjoy the appreciation while they were alive.
