Absolutely gorgegeous!
Someday when I am drunk enough, I will tell the story of the first time I ever heard an owl in the wild. Nah. On, second thought, I don't think I'll ever get that drunk.

but sometimes it's an omen.... :eek:Lol, plain o joe. I'm glad ma-maw didn't see that owl out her kitchen window. The rest of us would get doused in coal oil, be wearing garlic necklaces and having to drink castor oil while we tromped down to the church three times a day.

Only if you're a field mouse or a chipmunk. ;)
Thanks Meg and Rose... yes, I took it on Sunday. I was hoping to get a bit closer but as soon as I stepped off the porch, it was gone. :D

You wouldn't be either, sitting on a branch in 34 degree rain. :D If you look closely you can see the drops on his shoulders and head.
I wasn't aware of the "omen" things with owls. Interesting...
BTW that is called a "barred owl". They are also known for their distinctive call, which sounds like this...
"hoo-hoo hoo-hoo..... hoo-hoo hoo-hooooooooooooo"
We hear them from time to time.

The omen is if you see one close, or it lands close, someone you know is about to pass on...

Nope! Not working.
Maybe I'll tell the story to CS someday, and let her tell it the right way. It's hilarious if my listeners are as drunk as I am.
Well, AO, you are quite the photographer because that is a magnificent shot.
Common, Sage, we need to get DarkRose to tell her story. Drink up, DarkRose!
Edit: DarkRose, we crossposted. :D Okay, okay ... take your time but we won't forget!

Well, since I have no chance whatever of becoming the "Post Whore", I thought I'd give it a shot at being the "Post Tease". ;)

Tell ya what, DK, if we can get CS to spin your tale it will indeed be one fantastic read and we won't have to be drunk to be falling out of our chairs while doing so; Sue is one fantastic writer!!!
But in the meantime you Post Tease in Contention you....:bigbeer:

Now in getting back to the owl, I'm thinking of using it on my desktop - maybe it'll scare the cats & keep them off the keyboard!

Yep, I saw that title and thought:
"'A hooter for Yammy?' You mean Yammy doesn't already have...???"
That is a great image, Aleph.
Trivia in case anyone cares: The purportedly rare and/or endangered Spotted Owl that has been used to attack logging in the Northwest, is merely a variation of the common Barred Owl. It's not at all endangered. Envirowackos to the contrary, Spotted Owls live in both old growth and alder bottoms; I've seen 'em in both places.
It's really neat to sit your horses in the deep shade of tall timber, while two owls perch on nearby stumps and snags and look you over with curiousity. Then one grows more curious, opens a yard or so of wings, and flies to a closer stump for a better look -- all without making the slightest sound. Dad and I were enjoying it so much, he barely managed to take pictures. ;)
Another trivia: Many years ago, I was riding my horse home alone in the gray of early morning (having been dropped off at the pasture, just to bring that horse back home), probably about half asleep as the horse plodded along, when a screech owl scared the H*** out of me! :freakout: Those things can really be startling when they're nearby and you don't expect them. :D
Owls are cool.

A0,
Thank you so much! I collect all types of owl pictures and figurines and just last week I was fortunate enough to see a big HUGE snowy owl sitting on the telephone wires out here, no pic but I have my camera ever ready. I just KNEW when we moved out here that there had to be owls :) Just love them!
Sage: great idea, I snagged the pic for my desktop as well :)
As for Uncle Bob, Hammy, and Larred....
:whip:
Owls are so cool! Put a happy face on me :D

I've heard of owls, but never seen one. Here is a picture of one that used to be common in SW Arizona, before the state became yuppified.
http://mirror-pole.com/collpage/burr_owl/burowl_2.jpg
Pic source (http://mirror-pole.com/collpage/burr_owl/burrowl1.htm)
The Burrowing Owl is rapidly disappearing as the last open space with suitable burrows and food is eliminated. Once numerous, as the burrow diggers (Prairie Dogs, ground squirrels, and other large mammals that dig holes) were shot, poisoned, and exterminated by any means, the owl was a victim as if it were poisoned also. Completely beneficial to humans and their livelyhoods, the owl catches small rodents, lizards, other birds and occasionally insects.

I was appalled that you would only give ONE hooter to Yammy! Of course, not realizing it was an owl, I was just a bit quick in my judgement.
That's a great pic A0! We have a couple of owls that hunt our property also. It's really neat to hear them early in the morning. Also kind of disconcerting in it's own way. Glad you don't have that center-hooter thing going Yammy!

I have been up close and personal with a great horned owl. Well, maybe not personal. ;)
One afternoon, I went over to my mother's house. She told me to go out into the backyard and see what was sitting on top of the hedge. Lo and behold it was a great horned owl, just sitting there. It had an injured wing, so it couldn't fly away. It took over 4 hours before a person from the local bird of prey center for injured animals could come out to get him.
He was HUGE, and his/her wingspan was amazing. The man who came out had both of his arms covered in heavy leather up to his shoulders.
The only thing we could think of for the injury was that he might have gotten into a tussle with a hawk over 'lunch'.....

What? Are you SURE you really live in AZ like me? Why I see owls ALL the time, SmartAZ. Yep! ...the plastic ones that sit up on homeowner's rooftops to supposedly frighten the pigeons away - some are even "real" scary and spin around at intervals. The pigeons are extra spooked by those ones (read: NOT) as they sit (and poop) on them as a lazy way to get a panoramic view of the area :ll:
I dunno, maybe if the Chinese manufacturers added sound it would be more effective? I'm sure they could outsource audio capabilities to say India for example. Maybe the American pigeons would be so outraged they'd seal up the border so the illegal pigeons wouldn't fly over. Hmmm?
Ok back to the topic...Glad my wise friends here on CE could set me straight on the fact that there are actually other kinds of owls out there - who woulda thunk it?

Here in Arkansas, they say "who, who, who the hell are youuuuu". At least, that's what I always hear.
