Whats the proper way to do this? Outside to outside of the shots that are farthest away from one another? Inside to inside of farthest holes? Or is it from middle to middle of farthest holes?

I measure from outer edge to outer edge. I have seen people measure from center to center and inner edge to inner edge. I prefer my method as we are talking about holes that are up to .5" dia. Someone could knock off almost an inch from his/her grouping by one of the other methods.

The approved method used by all shooting competition bodies is center-to-center.

Thanks for the replys. I had some tight groups from prone yesterday and couldn't remember how it was done. Center to center makes more sense to me,otherwise you are getting punished for shooting larger calibers. Least thats the way it struck me.
