Christmas Eve, by Calvin (aka Bill Watterson)

On window panes, the icy frost
leaves feathered patterns, crissed and crossed,
but in our house the Christmas tree
is decorated festively
with tiny dots of colored light
that cozy up this winter night.
Christmas songs, familiar, slow
play softly on the radio.
Pops and hisses from the fire
whistle with the bells and choir.
My tiger is now fast asleep
on his back and dreaming deep.
When the fire makes him hot
he turns to warm whatever's not.
Propped against him on the rug,
I give my friend a gentle hug.
Tomorrow's what I'm waiting for
but I can wait a little more.

A christmas greeting from an atheist...

Well, I guess it's slightly better than "Happy Christmashannukwanzaaka."

Flint,

That's beautiful! Thank you for sharing it.

SmartAz,

Even though Flint and I may be poles apart religion-wise, as least there is a sharing for the desire for peace. In this season, perhaps this is the one thing that unites humankind: a desire for peace.

Let's enjoy that unity for at least one day. Afterwards, back to the sparring! :D :fencing:

Deb MC, you cut me to the quick! Flint and I agree on many things. We both use the English language fluently. We both desire peace. We both avoid stubbing toes on curbs. We both insist on applying common sense when analyzing religions. (Although his common sense is not the same as my common sense.)

I am very fond of Flint. If he were to break a leg, and I hope he does, I would be the first to send my condolences!

SmartAz,

Uhhhh, okay? :) Other than the part about hoping that Flint breaks a leg, I guess I can cut you some slack, considering it's Christmas Eve and all that.

Now, how Flint's gonna handle it, I dunno. I guess that's why there's the popcorn smilie, right?

Anyway, wishing you all a most blessed Christmas and New Year...

Nice one Flint, really nice...

Smart AZ:

I'm someone who actually prefers Happy Hanukkahchristmakwanzaaka... (hey, they were way B.C. so they deserve top billing!)[ ][ ]:D

Anyway, Happy Holidays on this Christmas, and a very, Merry New year to all my Cyber friends!

20 minutes before Christmas. If I were one to believe in an afterlife, I'd suggest that she wanted to give herself time to get under the mistletoe with my dad before others beat her to it. :) She's been plannin' this exit for a while now. No pain or anything...at 91, just tired of the BS of being incontinent, not hungry when OTHERS thought she SHOULD eat, etc.

Chills: Was gonna comment on the thread you started in another room about how when old people WANT to die, they don't need any intervention. They KNOW what they want, and they know how to get it. It's pretty cool when you think about it.

May we all get to go quietly when we're ready.

This thread is about Christmas Eve. Some will be born and some will die. Some will even think that some need to die BEFORE some can be born. :)

No need to feel sorry for Lucky; had she not wanted to go, she wouldn't have gone. No need to feel sorry for ME; She told me her intentions weeks ago. Just another day on the planet Earth; win some, lose some. Yeah, I'll miss her...stayed up all night last just lookin' at pictures of her, but I would have missed her WHENEVER she went or HOWEVER she went. I think it's pretty cool that SHE chose the time and the way. Life: intriguing experience; Death: end of intriguing experience.

Just relating MY Christmas Eve experience. What was YOURS?

I DO consider her lucky under the circumstances. She got to choose her way & her time. In many ways you're lucky as well - you knew this was coming & when it was going to happen.

You're right too in that no matter when, where or how, they're gone & there's no coming back. And we do miss them so.

Take care of yourself this week, enjoy the memories you shared with her & have of her.

Don't usually come in here, but something moved me to just now.

Flint, you getting soft in your old age? Nice piece.

Anita, I'm sorry for your loss, but it sounds as though she was ready.

Hi Anita - I just happened upon this thread 3 days after you posted; I wish I'd known sooner. Hope you continue to deal with it as well as you seemed to at the time of your posting. Treasure the memories in celebration of her life.

Peace,
Sage

Anita, I just happened into this room for some unknown reason tonight. Peace. It was her time and it was peaceful. My mother has Alzheimer's & vascular dementia, so we see her dribbling away a bit at a time for years, a confused ghost of her former self. Much better to go all at once when it's time. That's really the best I can wish for you and me. Peace and Tranquility be yours.
